It’s about time I contributed to the “Where” section of my blog! I had a few days off at the start of June, so the boyfriend and I decided to go to San Diego for a quick trip. Despite my majorly delayed flight and the “June gloom”, we had a blast!
My flight was originally scheduled to get in Wednesday at 11pm…I didn’t arrive until Thursday at 5pm. By the time I got to the Airbnb, it was around 6pm and I was exhausted. After a quick nap, we decided to explore the famous Gaslamp Quarter. We weren’t sure exactly what to expect – it was rowdier than we thought, especially considering it was a Thursday night! We were looking for something low-key and relaxing, which we weren’t able to find, so we ultimately ended up at a small taco bar above a hotel before crashing into bed at 10pm.
On Friday, we met with some of my boyfriend’s friends at Balboa Park. The Roses Garden was absolutely stunning, I’ve never seen so many gorgeous flowers in my life! It was also the only sunny day we had, so I was glad we spent our time there.
The evening was chilly and we both had a random craving for ramen. We decided on Tajima Ramen in Hillcrest. My boyfriend had the Tonkatsu ramen and I ordered the TAJIMA ramen, but I made the mistake of adding kimchi so the broth was completely overpowered. My favorite part were the noodles – they just the right amount of chewy.
After ramen, we decided to look for some dessert. Thanks to Yelp, we found Pappalecco two blocks away from ramen. It was the cutest dessert/coffee shop with amazing gelato. Their apple pie was also baked to perfection! We were so excited that we forgot to take pictures…
Saturday (our last full day)
Lots of people on Instagram recommended Communal Coffee, and it was the cutest place ever. Half coffee shop, half flower shop, the inside looked like those IG interior design accounts brought to life. We ordered the avocado toast and the caprese toast with prosciutto because #basic, but it was the rose vanilla latte that made me fall in love.
After our morning coffee, we drove to Cabrillo National Monument and learned the first European explorer to navigate California, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo. My boyfriend is really into history so we spent a few hours there and explored the national park.
Next, we made a quick stop at In-n-Out before checking out Old Town!We weren’t planning on it but we were searching for coffee and stumbled upon the cute neighborhood. American House Coffee & Tea was a great place to re-caffeinate before exploring the area. We didn’t spent much time there, unfortunately, because we wanted to make it to La Jolla Cove before it got too dark.
La Jolla Cove. We started out on the boardwalk and eventually moved to get closer to the sea lions. They are so cute!! We even had the chance to see a newborn and its mom coming out of the water! My only wish was that it was sunnier. We got there around 4pm and it was pretty chilly by the time we left.
I was able to grab some tea and coffee with the sweet Alice, who I first met on Instagram. She was super sweet and we had so much fun giggling and talking about how much we had in common! She’ll be entering medical school this fall, so hopefully we’ll be meeting again soon! Check her out here: @notesfromalice
We rented a car from at the recommendation of our friend from Dirt Cheap Car Rental. The name sounds sketchy but trust me, it was worth it. It was about $40 for the whole day and we were only responsible for the gas. We had the bad luck of having a flat tire but luckily we called the place and were referred to Discount Tires and had it replaced in under an hour. The best part was, it was completely covered so we didn’t have to pay extra! I really recommend getting a car from here instead of using Uber or Lyft, especially if you want to explore other parts of SD besides just downtown!
San Diego was a lot of fun, but definitely too short of a trip. Hopefully I’ll be able to make it back out there again soon!
This was my first time doing a “travel/where” post, so let me know your thoughts and if there’s anything I can improve on.
Thanks for reading, everyone 🙂
